How I Got Started in Pen Turning
Hi my name is Armand Chabot and I was born in Springfield Ma.. When I was a boy, my father had a Wood shop that was set up in our basement. This was a hobby of his and where I was first introduced to wood working. I wood make all kinds of different items including lamp stands and tables.
When I got older my desire to make things out of wood dwindled as the years moved on. I was no longer interested in wood making until just two years ago at the age of 55 yrs young.
I bought myself all the normal wood shop machinery and started to make items out of wood. But I wasn’t satisfied, I wanted to do something different. That’s when I saw a flier for making pens out of wood. It offered a class to learn how to make pens out of different wood, and signed up for the first class available. I expected to learn something new, try it a few times, and then move onto something else. But that didn’t happen!
As I made a pen, and saw how good it turned out, I had to turn another one, and then another one. I was hooked! Then I found I could make pens from wood found all over the world. Cocobolo, Olivewood, Bloodwood, Redwood, Zebrawood, and even a wood from the USA called Curly Maple.
The more pens I made the better I got at making them. So I decided to use some of my web page design skills and made a web page to sell my pens. I was excited when I started selling them to pen enthusiasts all over the USA.
This is a hobby I truly enjoy and hope others will enjoy using my pens in their everyday writing or as a collection of beautiful pens. |
